The Lectures

Introductions to Lectures

Elkins Park, Pennsylvania (First Church).

Lecturer: Mrs. Nelvia E. Ritchie; introduced by Mrs. Ruth T. High, who said:—

We have proved in our home many times that as we destroy the great enemy of mankind, fear, we can hear God's healing, redeeming Word. At one time one of our children was taken seriously ill. On account of great fear being manifest in the home, a member of the family called in a physician to diagnose the case. He pronounced the verdict of "double pneumonia" and promised no change for at least five days. The help of a Christian Science practitioner was asked; and the loving assurance came over the telephone, "Be not afraid of sudden fear" (as we read in Proverbs), for God is our ever present help. Within a few moments my fear was completely destroyed and the child sat up. The following morning the physician returned and upon examination exclaimed, "Why, yesterday I could have sworn that the child had double pneumonia, and to-day she is perfectly well." I think we both felt that the age of miracles had not passed. On page 188 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy we read, "Sin and the fear of disease must be uprooted and cast out." A wise gardener uproot only the weeds; and so Christian Science has come to the world to uproot these weeds of sin, sickness, and fear, and to plant in their stead the ever blooming seeds of hope, joy, and health.
