Looking Out

When the Apostle Paul proclaimed to the Athenians the true God, he said that He is "not far from every one of us: for in him we live, and move, and have our being." Beginning on page 256 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy writes: "Infinite Mind is the creator, and creation is the infinite image or idea emanating from this Mind. If Mind is within and without all things, then all is Mind; and this definition is scientific."

In the early days of her study of Christian Science, the writer was aided in understanding the above statements by the question someone propounded to her: "Do you look up to God, or out from Him?" Before knowing anything of Christian Science the answer undoubtedly would have been that she looked up to God, for in those days the Bible was a sealed book to her; not that it was unread, but that the truths it contains were but dimly discerned until Christian Science lighted the torch of spiritual understanding. Through the illuminating study of Science and Health, however, this student saw that spiritual sense beholds all things from the spiritual standpoint.

The Bible gives us proof of this fact; for does not Jesus say, "I came forth from the Father," thus recognizing his spiritual origin? And again, he said to the Jews: "I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things. ... I speak that which I have seen with my Father." Christ Jesus knew that he could see only what God sees. He knew that sight is spiritual, not material; that spiritual vision is a true state of consciousness. Furthermore, in the Lord's Prayer the Master calls God "our Father," thus including all God's ideas in spiritual sonship.
