[Original testimony in French]

Not being able to admit that God would permit evil,...

Not being able to admit that God would permit evil, and on the other hand not being willing to believe in a God of limited power, I was without hope and without a guide in the world when, in the spring of 1917, I found on the officers' table, where I was taking a meal, a pamphlet entitled, "Christian Science, its Principle and Method." I read it with interest, and through this reading acquired the certainty that I had found the way which would lead me to the understanding of God. I immediately procured a Bible, the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, subscribed to Le Heraut, and began to study the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly, endeavoring to put into practice what I acquired of the truth.

I can joyfully say that in a short time a general transformation took place in me. I perceived, first, that I was healed of chronic enteritis as well as of an intercostal pain from which I had suffered for more than ten years—a pain to which no relief was brought by the numerous doctors whom I had consulted. At the same time I was also freed from the habit of smoking.

Thanks to Christian Science, which became our family physician, all the difficulties which have presented themselves have been overcome; among others a sprained foot, which did not prevent me from walking eight kilometers, the accident being entirely forgotten two days later. A weak constitution and a depressed mind have given place to health and a happy disposition, which astonishes those who knew me ten or twelve years ago. Through spiritual understanding, confidence has replaced fear and doubt, excessive timidity has practically disappeared, anger and impulsiveness are more and more giving way to kindness; and a knowledge of God, which is daily increasing, facilitates my work in every way. In short, the "old man" is giving place to the "new man."
