Age
Much as one respects the general findings of the chief registrar of Friendly Societies (London), exception is taken to his official comment, as published in the Age cable messages from London on July 28, wherein he is stated to have referred to Christian Science as "a sort of religious despotism, with Mrs. Eddy as grand lama." History already places Mrs. Eddy among the greatest of the world's religious leaders, but her persistent instructions to her followers to look to God for guidance, instead of to a human personality, are not generally known. Regarding her leadership, Mrs. Eddy writes, "I again repeat, Follow your Leader, only so far as she follows Christ" (Message to The Mother Church for 1902, p. 4).
These words are not from the pen of a despot. Laws for the protection and growth of the movement were framed by Mrs. Eddy after deep, earnest prayer, but instead of bondage the By-Laws in the Manual of The Mother Church have brought to loyal members a freedom unknown before their true meaning was perceived, and then lived. The By-Laws breathe freedom from fear, personality, and other binding influences. The registrar further states that it is ridiculous to call Christian Science a "science." This point is neatly dealt with by Mrs. Eddy in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 111). She writes, "Christian Science is natural, but not physical. The Science of God and man is no more supernatural than is the science of numbers, though departing from the realm of the physical, as the Science of God, Spirit, must, some may deny its right to the name of Science. The Principle of divine metaphysics is God; the practice of divine metaphysics is the utilization of the power of Truth over error; its rules demonstrate its Science."
The healing results which have followed the operation of the spiritual, scientific law conclusively prove that the knowledge of the law of God, or divine Mind, evidence of which is so clearly seen in the healing works of Christ Jesus, has been revealed to the world through Christian Science; and because this knowledge is of God and His laws, it must of necessity be both Christian and scientific.
