Infinite Divine Love
The Christian Scientist never ceases to be grateful for the revelation of God as Love. And to this most gracious truth he constantly goes, there to refresh his thought with the realization of it. For what happens when one realizes, even imperfectly, that God is Love? He beholds the dark shadows of material sense not as realities, but as errors of belief; not as substantialities, but as illusions, because the fact that God is Love precludes the possibility of aught being real but that which is lovable and good.
The truth that God is Love is not a recent discovery. The Hebrew prophets sensed it; Christ Jesus taught it and demonstrated it; and John, the beloved disciple, actually stated it. But it must be admitted that succeeding generations only meagerly apprehended it. It is true that there were those who at certain periods caught glimpses of it, and that their thoughts were accordingly exalted and purified; but if one may judge from many of the deeds recorded in Christian history, there were many to whom God was only a superior being whose power to hate was equal to His power to love. In other words, although Jesus and his disciples based their teaching and practice on the truth that God is Love, many of their followers throughout the centuries, as their actions testify, were extraordinarily blind to the significance of both their teaching and practice.
It cannot be denied that it remained for Christian Science to emphasize the truth that God is Love and to draw the most far-reaching conclusions from it, conclusions which when accepted and realized will mean the overcoming of every phase of evil for mankind. On page 567 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy writes, "To infinite, ever-present Love, all is Love, and there is no error, no sin, sickness, nor death," thus stating the truth and the scientific conclusion which must be drawn from it. And everyone may establish the validity of the conclusion in his own experience precisely as he is faithful in his endeavor to demonstrate the truth that God is Love.
