From childhood I was very timid, and backwardness...
From childhood I was very timid, and backwardness seemed to cling to me even in later years until I found Christian Science. As the truth has unfolded in my consciousness, fear and error have given place to joy and contentment, gratitude and understanding. Many healings have come to me which were beautiful. Two instances of protection stand out in my thought as proofs of God's care. A short time after coming into Christian Science we were preparing to move to the country. It was springtime, and doors and windows were open. As we had sold part of the furniture there was money in the house. In the night we were awakened by a strange odor. It was dark, and we could see no one. I immediately declared God's presence and protection; I also repeated the twenty-third psalm. I felt no fear. The next morning we found nothing disturbed, but some clothing at the foot of the bed was still saturated with a chemical having that pungent odor, the only evidence of the night's marauder.
A few years later I went to an adjoining state to care for my sister's eight-months-old baby, my sister being under the doctor's care at the time. In the building there was an unusually steep stairway, and on starting down one day with a pitcher in one hand, in which to get some ice water, and the baby in the other arm, I slipped and fell to the bottom of the stairs. The baby was not hurt in the least, and I received only a few bruises; but the pitcher was broken. During the fall the thoughts that stayed so clearly in my consciousness were that God was my protection and that He was constantly taking care of the little baby.
To express my love and gratitude for all that Christian Science has done for me would take more than mere words. A life made better in every way, more active, purer, healthier, with a real purpose to be ever serving where God would have me serve; to be merciful, just, and pure—this is what Christian Science has given me. I have had many healings, of catarrh, lung trouble, colds, a tumor which caused me many months of suffering, and other ills. With loving help from a practitioner, and after attending a Christian Science lecture, I was healed and returned home feeling free and comfortable. The next morning the thought came to me to read the first chapter of Genesis, and it seemed very plain that God had made everything good. I had seemed to have no strength; even my books wearied me. As I realized that my strength was of God, I had all of it I needed. I then decided to put out some washing. As I worked I felt free and happy; and at the close of the day I had accomplished much, and felt no ill effects from it. This experience took place about eight years ago, and my strength has continued ever since. For this I am truly grateful, and also for the regeneration of my thinking—the healing of sin, of hatred, and of many unloving traits of thought.
