[Written for the Sentinel]

The Ascent

The Christ is climbing by the hill,
We hear the children cry;
And we must go, whate'er we know,
To see the Christ go by.
The sun is high within the sky,
And may we climb with thee?
And shall we learn Love's leading,
On the road to Calvary?

Yea, ye shall learn Love's leading,
Saith the Lord, on Calvary.

The Christ is climbing by the hill;
We see the daylight fail;
But shall we stay beside the way
Till sin and death prevail?
Though dark, though lone, the way become,
We may not faint nor flee;
But we shall learn compassion
On the road to Calvary.

Yea, ye shall learn compassion,
Saith the Lord, on Calvary.

The Christ has mounted by the hill;
The temple's veil is torn;
And fair and bright upon our sight
Is resurrection morn;
O'er vale and hill, o'er brook and rill,
We hear Love's harmony;
And we have gained dominion
On the mount of Calvary.

Yea, ye have gained dominion,
Saith the Lord, on Calvary.
