On page 55 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy has written: "In the words of St. John: 'He shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever.' This Comforter I understand to be Divine Science."

As an only child I grew up very much alone. I seemed to find no understanding or response around me, so lived more or less in a world of my own, never experiencing any real happiness or joy, but always searching for something, I knew not what. I could not have explained it then, but in the years to come I realized that my whole being was hungering and thirsting for comfort, for something that would satisfy. When I heard of Christian Science I at once recognized that it was the truth, but was too occupied with my studies to pay more heed to it just then. About twelve months later I awakened one morning in violent pain, which rapidly grew almost unbearable. At that time I knew only one Christian Scientist, but I knew without a shadow of doubt that Christian Science would heal me; so I got someone to telephone to this friend for help.

I was given absent treatment right away, and alone in my room I was instantly healed. Every trace of pain and weakness left me, and for this I was very grateful. But that was a small thing in comparison with the fact that for the first time in my life I was comforted. I literally felt the presence of God, divine Love, and it seemed to me that all the comfort I had longed for in all those years was being poured into that hour. And so I found that Christian Science not only heals the sick, but is indeed the Comforter which Jesus promised would come and abide with us. During the seventeen years that have followed that experience I have had proof after proof that Christian Science, and Christian Science alone, holds the solution to every problem that can ever come to anyone in human experience. Many times I have found myself face to face with seemingly insurmountable problems, when hope has almost given way to despair; but always the light has come, as it always will come, for "he is faithful that promised."
