I received my early training in the United Brethren Church...
I received my early training in the United Brethren Church under the guidance of sincere parents; but as I grew older I could find no solution through that channel for the problems which were continually presenting themselves. There seemed to be troubles on every side, and thus my wilderness journey began. About thirteen years ago, while living in another state, I heard my first lecture on Christian Science. I knew that Christian Scientist had something I had not found anywhere else. Soon afterwards I obtained Mrs. Eddy's works from the public library and read them all. I became deeply interested, as I knew they contained the truth for which I had been searching. Since that time I have experienced many healings, and I should like to tell of one which is foremost in my thought, in the hope that it may help someone else along the way.
About six years ago I had what physicians would term a serious nervous breakdown. I gave up my position in an engineering office and moved to the valley of Virginia, where I went through the darkest hours of my life. I did not care to see or talk with anyone, and I could not do any physical work. During this time I was having absent treatment from a Christian Science practitioner, who never wavered at any time. She suggested my getting help nearer home, so I asked the aid of another practitioner. In a very short time I was lifted out of this condition, and so complete was the healing that I gained thirty pounds in weight. We then moved to this city, where I expected to find work, and the problem of lack seemed very real. Through the aid of a kind practitioner I was given employment, the repairing of a bridge, the hardest work and heaviest lifting I had ever done; but there were no bad results whatever. A problem of lack has been overcome, and I am truly grateful to God and to Mrs. Eddy for giving us Christian Science. I am grateful to the practitioners who so lovingly helped me, and to my dear wife who never allowed me to become discouraged. My only desire is to live the life that will best express my gratitude.
