Among the Churches

Current Notes

Toronto, Ontario, Canada (Third Church).—The corner stone of Third Church of Christ, Scientist, 70 High Park Avenue, was laid to-day, only the church officers and necessary workmen being present. The quietness and simplicity of the brief service was in accordance with instructions given in the Church Manual by Mary Baker Eddy: "No large gathering nor display shall be allowed when laying the Corner Stone of a Church of Christ, Scientist. Let the ceremony be devout. No special trowel should be used."

Berkeley, California (First Church).—First Church of Christ, Scientist, at Dwight Way and Bowditch Street, is completing its new structure to house the Sunday school. The building faces Dwight Way, adjoining the church edifice. The style of the new building is similar to the church building, which is considered one of the city's outstanding works of art. It is a composite of elements of early Christian and Gothic forms and decorations. The structure of timber and concrete is exposed within and without and is the basis of decoration, there being no plaster or stucco. Rich insets of Gothic tracery have been used, decorated in gold and full colors. The roof is covered with tiles.—Berkeley Gazette.
