Early in October, 1927, our little son, then four and a half years old, was taken ill with tonsillitis and a severe cold. The tonsillitis abated, but a difficulty appeared in his right thigh. The physician whom we consulted diagnosed periostitis, and said that an operation would be necessary. The little boy had high fever daily. One day he was so much worse that almost all organic functioning stopped. His body was very much swollen, and his temperature continued to rise. The doctor informed us that the little one would pass on. The periostitis had disappeared, he said, but pus had entered the blood. At the same time the child was suffering from severe inflammation of the kidneys, and pneumonia had set in.
My father-in-law had given us the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and some copies of Der Herold. We began to recognize the truth and clung to it, and our spirit was strengthened. Six weeks passed in this way, the doctor maintaining his assertion when he visited the little one. We could not find a Christian Science practitioner, since the Herolds were very old copies and the addresses uncertain. Nearly all our letters were returned to us with the remark "unknown." However, we did not give up trying to find a practitioner; and at last we received a reply. Like a ray of light in the night the truth came. Again we were forced to acknowledge that the truth and God's love, to which we had clung, had not forsaken us. Everything changed rapidly. The fever abated, and the temperature became normal. The little one, who had been in bed for three months, got up the same week. Two years have now passed, and the little fellow is happy and well. There is no sign that he ever passed through a long illness.
We remember our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, and express our sincere gratitude for the willing assistance of the practitioner. Above all, we look, in our prayer of thanksgiving, to Him who has revealed His great love to us. Our cry goes out to all mankind to recognize the love God.
