Mrs. Eddy says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 14), "The Lord's Prayer is the prayer of Soul, not of material sense." She also says in "Retrospection and Introspection" (p. 31), "The first spontaneous motion of Truth Love, acting through Christian Science on my roused consciousness, banished at once and forever the fundamental of faith in things material; for this trust is the unseen sin, the unknown foe,—the heart's untamed desire which breaketh the divine commandments."

These statements bring to remembrance an experience that came to me about twenty-eight years ago. As a child my strength and endurance were very limited, with frequent periods of illness. It became necessary for me to go into the business world. After a few years I was compelled to give up business—a nervous wreck. I was confined to my bed for three months, and the remaining part of the year was an invalid, useless to myself or anyone else. My physician said he could do nothing more for me, and that if I wanted to live I must never return to business. In the meantime Christian Science was presented to me by a friend; but being quite a devoted student of the New Testament, I feared this new teaching might be some ism opposing or taking from the teachings of the Bible, in which I thoroughly believed, although I failed to fathom the depth of its meaning.

The time came when it seemed that man's extremity was God's opportunity. It was necessary that I fill my place in the world, not only for my own good but for the sake of others. One day I threw myself on the couch in utter despair and discouragement. I had tried in every way to help myself and find the way of Life; so, unconsciously, I breathed out the words, "What can I do?" It seemed as if a voice spoke and said, You can say the Lord's Prayer. Almost in astonishment my reply was, Yes. So I commenced repeating it slowly, waiting after each line for some spiritual unfoldment. Nothing came until after the last line, "Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever." It was at this point that the "spontaneous motion of Truth and Love" came upon me as with a great light, revealing God as divine intelligence, and sweeping aside all human opinions. It was plain that this intelligence included my being. This was very satisfactory; and I said, "If it be true—and it is—I will accept anything that God sends me, even if it is Christian Science." I arose; my step was light; I was cheerful and happy. This was noticed by those in the home, but no questions were asked.
