When I first took up the study of Christian Science I had...
When I first took up the study of Christian Science I had been doctoring for many years for nervous diseases. I could eat scarcely anything, as my stomach seemed all out of order; in fact, my whole body seemed discordant. It finally affected my heart. I went to a distant city to consult a physician who my parents thought could surely help me. After the examination he told me he did not know what was the cause of my difficulty; that he would just have to try different medicines and endeavor to find out where the trouble lay. I went home to my friends that evening with several bottles of medicine and two boxes of pills. I told the friend whom I was visiting what the doctor had said. She asked me if I had ever thought of trying Christian Science. I told her I had not, and she suggested that I talk with a Christian Science friend of hers, which I did. The latter gave me the name of a practitioner. At this time I was not able to walk a block without sitting down to rest, and could go nowhere alone.
The day after I talked with the Christian Scientist I went to see the practitioner. She spoke very lovingly to me and had me read an article in a Sentinel. I felt so uplifted I told her I should like to try Christian Science. I said, "Think of all the money I spent yesterday for medicine; I hate to throw it away." She replied, "Go home, think it over, and if you want a doctor keep your medicine; if you want Christian Science throw the medicine away and come back to me tomorrow." After dinner I took my medicine, but before retiring I burned the pills and emptied every bottle. From that hour I gained in strength. The third day I was able to walk the six blocks to the practitioner's home, and at the end of one week I returned to my own home and resumed work in my store. My complete healing did not manifest itself at once, but different phases of the disorder disappeared one by one. Words cannot express my gratitude to those loving friends and to the dear practitioner who pointed out the way. I have been healed of bowel trouble, chronic tonsillitis, severe headaches, influenza, dizzy spells, and many other troubles. Through God's love I have been able to lay aside glasses which I had worn for years.
My little daughter has never known anything but Christian Science help. I should like to tell of an experience she had when she was six years old. We were visiting some friends at their summer cottage, which was not wired for electricity. The kerosene lamps were new to her, and after dinner when the rest of us all went into another part of the house she remained behind where the lamp was burning. I heard her call and went to the door. There she stood holding that hot chimney in her little hands, her fingers clasping the center part of the chimney. She did not drop it, but carefully placed it on the table beside the lamp. As I went out the others came to the door. They immediately suggested material remedies, saying her hands would be blistered. She said, "No, I just want mother." I asked them to leave us alone for a few minutes, which they did, and I can truthfully say that her hands were not even red. To say that the friends were amazed scarcely expresses it. They talked of it weeks after, and would remark, "i just cannot see why her hands were not burned." This experience, and all our healings, for she and I have had many, have proved to me beyond a doubt that God's Word is not only "quick," but "powerful."
