[Written for the Sentinel]

Transfiguration

Behold the world newborn, newborn of Spirit!
In radiant flowers, and dew-drenched scented air,

Symbols we see of God's real world all-glorious;
Earth is transformed; true beauty now is here.

Not with the eye of sense can we behold it;
Yet now to us the wonder is revealed
At times to glimpse the spiritual creation,
Radiant reality by Love unsealed.

Man in God's likeness, image fair and glorious,
With glistening robes of pure and spotless white,
Radiant and joyous, loving all, beloved,
Fairest of all the true creation bright.

Behold the Christ borne to our humble earth-life,
To meanest cottage crib and poorest home,
Raising and sanctifying all our labor;
Unto the heart of man the Christ is come.

Lowly, transformed, and with a radiant splendor,
On the uplifted cross mankind doth rise,
One in the glory of Christ's overcoming,
One with the great, supremest sacrifice.

So shall our human life shine with all beauty,
Its meaning now be wholly sanctified,
We stand upon the mount in radiant glory,
With him who once for us was crucified.

So shall we stand upon the mount in glory
With him who once for us was crucified;
And in this hour, in holiness and beauty,
Our lives shall thus be wholly sanctified.
