The Lectures

Introductions to Lectures

Croydon, England (First Church).

Lecturer: Mrs. Nelvia E. Ritchie; introduced by Miss W. Allen, who said:—

Jesus said, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." The world to-day is hungering for this truth. There is an ever increasing longing urging mankind to search for the solution of the problem of human existence, as it appears to-day with all its sin, sickness, and sorrow. Christian Science, or the Science of Christianity, shows clearly how we can, here and now, solve our human problems by a knowledge of the truth as discovered by Mary Baker Eddy, and as explained in her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." I became interested in Christian Science simply by reading this book. Up to that time I knew only one person who was interested in Christian Science. I had not come in contact with any of its healing work. I was perfectly satisfied with the form of religion which I was then following, and I had no specific need of healing. Nevertheless, when this friend was staying with us, one day I opened the book out of curiosity. I had read only two or three chapters when I realized that this must be the truth. Its appeal was irresistible, and I decided then and there that I must learn all I could about it. In a few months the change of thought which this book produced in me healed me of constant headaches and of astigmatism, for which I had for some years worn glasses which several oculists had told me I should always need to wear. Other healings followed, and I began to realize that I had found the truth which makes men free.
