In a sermon reported in your columns recently, an evangelist spoke mistakenly of Christian Science. Contrary to the speaker's inferences, Christian Scientists honor and revere our Lord and Master, Christ Jesus; they acknowledge that Christ Jesus is "the way, the truth, and the life;" and they strive so to purify their thoughts that they may truly follow him in their lives. Furthermore, for the healing of sickness and sin they employ the method of Christ Jesus, who said, "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also." The healing method employed by the Master and by the early Christians was not material; it was a spiritually mental method, which corrected a person's thinking and motives concurrently with the removal of his disease. This fact is proved by Paul's statements: "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus," and, "Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind." These words of Paul are in harmony with the Biblical truth that as a man "thinketh in his heart, so is he."
Through prayerful and consecrated study of the Bible, Mary Baker Eddy discovered the truths underlying the healing works of Christ Jesus. Because Christian Science employs no material means for healing, but follows the spiritual method of Christ Jesus, Mrs. Eddy appropriately designated her discovery as "Christian"; and because Christian Science contains no speculative hypotheses, but applies the exact knowledge of God, divine Truth and Love, and heals according to definite spiritual laws, she correctly named it "Science." Christian Science contradicts the evidence of the erring material senses, turns mankind away from matter to Spirit, and joyously proclaims the omnipotence of God. Through its loving ministrations, "pains," which seem to be "facts," are destroyed. Christian Scientists are dealing compassionately with their fellow-men by helping them to get rid of sin and of the diseases that seem much more than "imaginary ills." Why should they be condemned for accepting "fees" when their Master said that "the labourer is worthy of his hire"? There is no "lying" in the teaching and practice of Christian Science, which says in the words of Christ Jesus, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."
