Jewish Times

Permit me to thank you for your appeal for more of brotherly love in racial and religious intercourse, as well as for the desire expressed for a better understanding and more of religious tolerance among men, contained in an editorial in the Jewish Times entitled, "Let Us Understand Each Other." Also for the moderation exercised by the author of an article appearing in the same issue under the caption, "Reform and Christian Science." The writer of this article, however, is seriously mistaken in referring to Christian Science as a "cult," as the term is usually employed. Therefore, please give me space to inform your readers that Christian Science is no more deserving of such an appellation than would be the Jewish and many other faiths; for the excellent reason that it does not depend upon or worship personality, nor is it a fad, or a mere system of ceremonies. On the contrary, Christian Science is entitled to full acknowledgment as a religion because of the indisputable fact that it inculcates the spiritual worship of the one God alone.

The writer further states, "It takes a certain type of Jew, and especially Jewess, to pose as a Christian Scientist. ..." I am glad to be able to affirm that I know many Christian Scientists, who have been Jews, but not one among them whose religion can be described as a pose. All of them reveal a quality which may explain what this writer terms the "puzzling phenomenon" of their adherence to Christian Science; and that quality is sincerity.
