A physician once made the statement that I was predisposed...
A physician once made the statement that I was predisposed to tuberculosis, advised me to take plenty of fresh air and prescribed certain foods. As a consequence, I lived in constant fear that this disease was going to develop. I ate from four to six raw eggs daily for several years, and when I heard of different medicines would purchase them and experiment to see if they would do me any good. When the hot weather came on I always felt worse and would get very much discouraged. So every summer I went West in order to build myself up to ward off the disease I so much feared, as I did not believe that I could remain healthy in the southern climate. Finally, on my third trip to the West, I was walking down the street one Sunday morning and the thought came to me to go around to the Christian Science church and see what this religion was. As I walked into the church I noticed the indescribable peace which is so characteristic of Christian Science congregations. The first thing that caught my eye was this beautiful statement from Psalms, "He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions." I inwardly prayed and hoped that these words were available to meet my need, and somehow I felt that they were just as potent to meet our present-day needs as they were in the time of the patriarchs and Christ Jesus.
I later secured a copy of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and through the study of this book and the loving help of a Christian Science practitioner, the fear of climate and of tuberculosis was destroyed. This experience and many others have proved to me that Truth has not lost its healing power and that I can live in the South and remain healthy. I have had many physical healings in Christian Science, such as the healing of fever, influenza, colds, and minor ills; but I am most grateful for the spiritual uplift and for the knowledge that Christian Science is the way out of its difficulties for all mankind.
It was not just an accident that I went to the Christian Science church that Sunday morning many years ago, but I see in this experience the leading of divine Mind; and since that time God has been gently leading me by ways that I knew not of, out of the great desert of human thinking into the land of Christian Science.
