In 1904, at the passing away of a friend, I came face to face with the fact that I did not know God. I began earnestly to pray that I might find Him, and attended several churches. At the end of a few months I found that these did not satisfy my longing, and I discontinued going to church. Shortly after this a friend called and left with me the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy.
At that time I knew nothing about the teachings of Christian Science; but because I was earnestly searching for the true God, no matter where I might find Him, I did as one must in all fairness do: I began to read this book with an open mind and without prejudice. Although I needed healing of the body, I was seeking only the healing of the mind; and I shall never forget the ray of light which broke through the clouds of unbelief, flooding my consciousness with divine Love and illuminating the familiar passages in the Bible for me. I found myself reading this book in connection with the Bible almost constantly.
Inside of two weeks healed of the need of wearing glasses which I had used for five years, and which oculists had told me I could never go without. Chronic constipation, from which I had suffered since childhood, also left me; and melancholia, a condition to which I had been subject for several years, was entirely overcome. To me all this was wonderful; but it was as nothing compared with the thought that I had at last found God—God whom Jesus knew so well, God whom I had so longed to know when attending Sunday school as a little child.
