God the Only Mind
Sometimes we hear the remark made by one desirous of engaging in the systematic study of Christian Science, "I find it so hard to study; it seems so difficult to concentrate my thoughts!" Here is a condition of mortal thought which should not be submitted to, but speedily overcome, if one is to progress. How is it to be analyzed? Is there more than one Mind? Has man a mind apart from God, infinite divine Mind? Is the real man, made in the image and likeness of God, of which material man is but the counterfeit, subservient to the lie of a mortal belief in more than one Mind?
Let us read on page 318 of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," how Mrs. Eddy answers these questions. There she writes: "In Science man is governed by God, divine Principle, as numbers are controlled and proved by His laws. Intelligence does not originate in numbers, but is manifested through them." And, again, on the following page, she says, "Mystery, miracle, sin, and death will disappear when it becomes fairly understood that the divine Mind controls man and man has no Mind but God." Since God, divine Principle, is All, man, the spiritual expression of God, cannot be influenced or controlled by erroneous mortal beliefs, improperly called mind. Intelligence, wisdom, and understanding are qualities of God; therefore the qualities of man are, by reflection, those of his Maker. The thoughts of immortal man are God's thoughts, ever fixedall that is pure, righteous, helpful, and harmonious.
Christ Jesus taught the scribes and Pharisees, saying, "Out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: these are the things which defile a man." Christian Science teaches the powerlessness—aye, the nothingness—of mortal belief and its derivative errors, explaining and proving that God, divine Mind, is the only power, the only real Being. But just so long as error seems real to human belief it must be denied and superseded by spiritual thoughts of God, infinite Truth; then will the harmony of spiritual existence be demonstrated, and man's ability to understand the Word of God be brought to light. To acquire this divine state of consciousness, thought should be continually, but not fearfully, watched; and if found deviating from that which is spiritual and harmonious, it should be immediately arrested and patiently, yet persistently, guided back into the wholesome channels of Truth. One who was deeply interested in Christian Science, after experiencing a severe mental strain, found it almost impossible to keep her thoughts on what she read in Science and Health. However, she painstakingly studied the Lesson-Sermon for each week, as given in the Christian Science Quarterly, many times every day, often reading it aloud, until that false argument was completely overcome.
