Liberty

WEBSTER defines liberty as freedom and immunity. Mankind has always endeavored to gain liberty; and Christian Science is showing men what this desirable state of being really is, the extent to which they may hope to attain it, and the method by which it can be demonstrated. Christian Science is telling them that since they are the children of God, they are entitled to liberty, including freedom from bondage to all so-called material health laws and immunity from the so-called laws of heredity. On page 228 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy says: "Mortals will some day assert their freedom in the name of Almighty God. Then they will control their own bodies through the understanding of divine Science." This Science teaches that man, made in the image and likeness of God, is perfect and harmonious, and is therefore immune from all so-called material laws. What a glorious liberty is this! Man subject only to God's law, the law of perpetual and harmonious health! Surely this understanding, which enables us to reflect God and thus to control ourselves without interference from matter or material laws, is worth striving for.

Men are also entitled to freedom from the bondage of fear, from dread of disease, lack, limitation, sin, and death. John tells us, "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear;" and Paul says, "Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty." Our dear Leader writes on page 227 of Science and Health: "Christian Science raises the standard of liberty and cries: 'Follow me! Escape from the bondage of sickness, sin, and death!' Jesus marked out the way. Citizens of the world, accept the 'glorious liberty of the children of God,' and be free! This is your divine right." And Jesus declares, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." What is this truth? It is the truth about God, man, and the universe; the truth that God is infinite Spirit, ever present; that He made all and is All; that man in His image and likeness is spiritual and perfect; and that nothing unlike God is present or has power. This is the truth which Jesus says will make men free.

Christian Science recognizes the possibility of mankind's attainment of this new freedom; and it sets the captive free by enabling him to realize the wonderful liberty of the sons of God.
