In an address entitled "What Causes Desires, Greed, and Illness?" given to a literary society by a lady, and reported in a recent issue of the Leicester Mail, it was said, "Christian Science or mental healing by suggestion was for the morbidly inclined." Christian Science is not "mental healing by suggestion," nor are the healings through Christian Science brought about by the human will. Its healings are accomplished in the same way as were those of Jesus. The healing work is brought about by the understanding of the omnipotence and omnipresence of God, good, in whom, as Paul tells us, "we live, and move, and have our being," and of whom the spiritual, real man is the image and likeness.
On page 98 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy writes: "Beyond the frail premises of human beliefs, above the loosening grasp of creeds, the demonstration of Christian Mind-healing stands a revealed and practical Science. It is imperious throughout all ages as Christ's revelation of Truth, of Life, and of Love, which remains inviolate for every man to understand and to practise." Spiritual man—God's likeness—never has fallen from his perfect state, and, as errors in mathematics are corrected by properly applying the rules of mathematics, so all the ills of human experience are eliminated by understanding and applying the rules of divine Principle, God, who governs His creation harmoniously, who "saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good." Again, Christian Science, which is the Science of Christianity, appeals to all who are desirous of understanding the divine Principle underlying the teachings of Christ Jesus; and it enables them to repeat his work of healing sickness and sin.
