The Lectures

Introductions to Lectures

Los Angeles, California (Second Church).

Lecturer: Paul A. Harsch; introduced by Mrs. Grace Green Olmsted, who said:—

Some years ago the youngest member of our family was severely burned by the explosion of a quantity of firecrackers. A call for help went over the telephone to a Christian Science practitioner, and her understanding of God and of man as made in His image and likeness was so clear that in less than an hour's time the child was quietly sleeping, and did not again complain of any suffering. Because of the nature of the burns dire results were predicted. We had planned to leave with a party of friends on a camping trip two days after the accident occurred; and as the feeling in the neighborhood was rather hostile because the child was under Christian Science treatment, we decided to carry out our original plans and went a two days' journey into the mountains, where we were eight miles from even a telephone. Under the starlit heavens, in the glory of the sunsets and in the great open spaces and quietness, God seemed very near, and it was easy to lift one's thought to Him and to hold it there. In four weeks we returned to this city, the healing practically completed, and left a few days later for the East, people everywhere speaking of the child's activity, agility, and glowing health. They could not know of the fiery furnace the lad had seemed to walk through, because there was no "smell of fire" on his garments.
