May I express my appreciation of the progressive view expressed in your editorial, commenting on a recent protest against a state textbook containing a paragraph calculated to discredit those systems and religions which depend on mental treatment and on prayer to recover and preserve health. In fact, the protest against the objectionable paragraph in the textbook coincides with your statement: "The fundamental objection to any attack on 'mental healing' is that we have no reason to doubt the validity of mental healing. ... And no association of physicians or of citizens of any sort has any right to use the police powers of the state to prevent mental healing, and no branch of the state educational system has any right to give a bad name to mental healing." However, from other statements in the editorial, it might be inferred that "mental healers" are responsible for some objectionable activities in our educational systems, and that they, at times, attempt to obstruct the operations of the government, acting in the interests of public health. Since the term "mental healers," as employed in the editorial, quite likely would be regarded by many as including Christian Scientists, in justice to the latter I desire to state that in no case do they undertake to impose their religious views on any public or private institution, or upon any person or group of persons. Neither do Christian Scientists attempt to obstruct the administration of public authority in safeguarding the public, whether in matters of health or otherwise. On the contrary, Christian Scientists cooperate with law enforcement, and health officers emphasize the fact that no citizens are more obedient to quarantine regulations.
