In a recent issue of the Daily Mail there is reported a sermon by an evangelist in which he states that false religions are feeding and thriving on powerless Christians, and goes on to couple the name of Mrs. Eddy with agnostics like Payne and Ingersoll, as among those who have tried to find some other "way" than his (Christ Jesus') way. By this statement he has shown a regrettable lack of knowledge concerning the teachings of Mary Baker Eddy, and your readers consequently have been misinformed; for this reason I would be glad to have you allow me space for a correction. Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, certainly could not have been seeking some other way than the Christ when she wrote in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 30), "We cannot choose for ourselves, but must work out our salvation in the way Jesus taught." And in the same work (p. 332) she agrees with Paul that "there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus." As to the truth or falsity of the religion she gave to a waiting world, Christian Scientists prefer it to be judged on the basis laid down by Christ Jesus himself, when he said, "And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; ... they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover." Let not personal opinion but the works done in his name attest the truth of Christian Science.
