On the first page of the Preface to "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy declares, "The time for thinkers has come." These words were proclaimed over fifty years ago, and "millions of unprejudiced minds—simple seekers for Truth" (ibid., p. 570) have heard the trumpet call and are now rejoicing in a new and happy outlook upon life.

I remember, when I was a very little child, asking my mother, "Who made me?" And she replied that God had made me out of the dust of the ground! A few years later I asked what it meant to be "born again." Thus my childhood was filled with questionings about the why and the wherefore of so many things that seemed unreasonable. One day I complained to my father, who was a Presbyterian minister, that I could not understand the book of Revelation, but he only replied sadly, "Oh, my child!" It was not explained to me then, and my doubts and fears multiplied until I developed a discontented and unhappy disposition; and not until I read the Bible in the light of Christian Science was this unhappy state removed. When I heard for the first time the twenty-third psalm as it is interpreted in Christian Science (see Science and Health, p. 578), I was healed of an obstinate case of nervous prostration which the doctors had failed to cure.

Then it was that "a new heaven and a new earth" began to be revealed to me, and life took on a different aspect. With my first treatment in Christian Science a vision of the great truth that would unfold to me throughout eternity came to my awakened sense. The healing progressed so rapidly that in two weeks I was back at my post in the high school, from which I had been absent many weary weeks. I took up the commencement work as usual with a joyous sense of strength and courage. My days were happy ones, for the first time in my life. My friends all marveled at the change, for I had always been delicate and easily discouraged. Now, I could prove how "Love inspires, illumines, designates, and leads the way" (Science and Health, p. 454).
