Angels

The term "angels" is one which is held sacred by all mankind. It is derived from a Greek word meaning messenger, and is used very frequently in the Bible. These angels, or messengers, appeared to many of the prophets and apostles of old, and the time of their appearing was usually when there was great need, when prophet or apostle was exercising deep faith in the divine presence and power, and in its ability to save from the thrusts of the carnal mind in its vain attempt to thwart the purposes of good. These messengers came with great power, bringing to the worthy ones release, through the destruction of error, from the trials they were undergoing.

Because of the allegorical phrasing of much that is in the Bible, the term "angels" often seems enshrouded in mysticism. Mary Baker Eddy, however, in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," illumines this term, clarifies the Bible usage of it, and makes it possible for us to-day consciously to entertain these angels, and to receive the blessings accruing from the spiritual power inherent in them. When writing under the heading, "Our angelic messengers," Mrs. Eddy says (p. 299): "My angels are exalted thoughts, appearing at the door of some sepulchre, in which human belief has buried its fondest earthly hopes. With white fingers they point upward to a new and glorified trust, to higher ideals of life and its joys. Angels are God's representatives." From this we understand that it is by means of God's angels, His "exalted thoughts," that we rise to a higher sense of existence.

Many there are who have found that matter affords no satisfaction and who are looking for spirituality to bring them contentment and peace. God has supplied in this age the need for all such. He has given to them, in fulfillment of prophecy, the mighty evangel, Christian Science. We read of this prophecy in the tenth chapter of Revelation, where we find these opening words: "And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, ... and he had in his hand a little book open: and he set his right foot upon the sea, and his left foot on the earth." Christian Scientists understand that this "little book" is Science and Health, because they have witnesses innumerable to the power of its teachings over error of every name and nature. This book is indeed enabling many to prove the words and repeat the works of Christ Jesus, thus showing forth God's omnipotence.
