When quite a girl I was told to be careful of my eyes or I would have to wear glasses, as I had what was called granulated eyelids. At the time of becoming interested in Christian Science, about twenty years ago, I was able to read and sew only with difficulty; but this condition has been entirely overcome, and I can now use my eyes without fear of any injurious results. Another demonstration occurred several years ago for which I am especially grateful. I was taken with a severe pain in my side and at times was hardly able to walk; but I declared and knew that "a spiritual idea has not a single element of error, and this truth removes properly whatever is offensive" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, p. 463), and went about my daily duties as best I could. About ten days later the pain became almost unbearable. Taking "Miscellaneous Writings" I read on page 241: "God never made you sick: there is no necessity for pain; and Truth destroys the error that insists on the necessity of any man's bondage to sin and sickness. 'Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.'" Declaring this alternately with "the scientific statement of being," as found on page 468 of Science and Health, I fell asleep, and awoke with a realization that I was healed, although the obstruction had not disappeared.
The next day I was asked to substitute as Second Reader on the following Sunday, only two days later. It seemed impossible to do so, as to sit caused great pain; but realizing that the opportunity had come to prove dominion, I clung to the truth that there is only one power, and also that "what God cannot do, man need not attempt" (Science and Health, p. 231). As I was about to leave for church on Sunday morning to be at my post of duty, the obstruction passed from me.
I am indeed grateful to God and to Mrs. Eddy for giving this truth to the world; for all the channels provided for our growth in it; and those whose untiring service helps to make this growth possible.
