It is with a sense of gratitude that I am impelled to give this testimony of a healing which took place about fifteen years ago.

There appeared just below the jaw a hard growth or swelling. Having considerable dread of a surgical operation, instead of going to see a doctor I went to a Christian Science pracitioner and was given treatment. After about two weeks the pain had gone, but the growth remained. However, it gradually diminished in size, until it finally disappeared some months later. During this time I was receiving help from the practitioner. By the slow healing I was forced to take up the study of Christian Science for myself, and to put into practice some of the things learned. I soon found that a change was taking place in my consciousness. Habits which I thought I never would be able to overcome, I found were giving way and being replaced by better and more useful views of the universe, including myself.

In Isaiah it is stated, "The parched ground shall become a pool, and the thirsty land springs of water: in the habitation of dragons, where each lay, shall be grass with reeds and rushes." This prophecy, I think, symbolizes the change which took place in my consciousness. By this experience it was unfolded to me how Christian Science operates in the healing of so-called physical diseases. As the truth about God and man dawned upon me, some of the mortal beliefs which I had allowed a place in my consciousness—in fact, I thought they were a part of it—naturally faded out. And as my mentality was being freed from some of the dragons of selfishness and sensualism, including hatred, self-condemnation, discouragement, the body was correspondingly being freed from pain and disease. I can now see that disease is mental in origin, and while that which I thought was a physical disease has long since disappeared, the mental healing which started at that time has been going on ever since. Chronic sick headaches, which had bothered me since childhood, have almost entirely disappeared. With the aid of a practitioner I was healed of Spanish influenza.
