"Know thyself"

In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 571) Mrs. Eddy writes, "Know thyself, and God will supply the wisdom and the occasion for a victory over evil;" and again, on page 345 she tells us, "It is indeed no small matter to know one's self."

How, then, may this knowing be accomplished? Through Christian Science. This light of Truth must reach every corner of human consciousness, uncovering what is objectionable and distressful to us, much which we hitherto have never been aware of. Selfishness, perhaps even masquerading in the name of generosity, and many other sins which formerly were unheeded or unobserved, will stand out boldly, exposed by this searching light.

Such an exposure may indeed make us tremble; but here is our opportunity for a victory, as God supplies wisdom; and here is also our test. For victory is not gained without effort on our part. It may mean hard, patient, and persistent work. It is just at this point, however, that the greatest care must be exercised; for so deceptive is so-called mortal mind that, if we are not alert, almost unconsciously we may slip backward by ignoring what ought and must be attended to, in order that every trace of insincerity, self-seeking, envy, jealousy, or anything else that does not reflect the nature of God, may be courageously met and mastered.
