One of my first demonstrations in Christian Science...
One of my first demonstrations in Christian Science is that for which I have always felt the most gratitude. I became interested in Christian Science a short time before our daughter was born. At the time of her birth I had with me a nurse, a long-time friend, who was not a Christian Scientist. She did not think she was antagonistic to Christian Science, but she would not accept its teaching. She remained with me about three weeks after the child was born, and during those weeks she was given the entire charge of the child. As I bathed the child the first day after the nurse had gone, I found on her body a large sore. It was vicious looking, and as large as the sole of her little foot at that time. The nurse had made no mention of it to me at all.
My first thought was one of fear. Next I thought I must call a practitioner; but then came this thought, very clearly: It is God who healeth our diseases; this can be healed right now, for God is everywhere. I did not know really how to work in Christian Science, but my thought was very clear along the line that God is Love, unchanging Love, and as such it was impossible for Him to inflict such a thing upon a sweet little innocent babe. As I worked along this line of thought I lost all sense of fear, and my understanding of man's spiritual, divine nature became clearer. I covered the sore in such a way as to prevent friction, and proceeded with the child's bath. The second day I did not permit myself to uncover it or look at it. By the third day there was not even a trace of it left; nor did it ever reappear. I am very grateful for this healing, and for the strength it gave me in working out the many problems that have presented themselves during the twenty years that have since passed.
Four years later we moved into a small town where I was the only Christian Scientist. It was not always easy to reach a practitioner in time of need; so I saw how divine Love had doubly blessed me in that first healing. It was not only that the child was healed, but I was given a firmer hold, a stronger foundation for future needs.
