In a recent issue of the Herald, Dr. Frank Crane stated that Christian Science and the Coué system rest upon the same basis in "our control of our thoughts." This statement shows a misapprehension of Christian Science, which rests on a diametrically opposite basis from the Coué system. Christian Science employs the method of Christ Jesus, who depended on the power of God, of Truth and Love, to correct wrong thoughts and conditions. Jesus knew that God is good, and that the spiritual man is the image and likeness of God. He knew that the thoughts of God, divine Mind, are good thoughts, and that spiritual man expresses these good thoughts. He knew that evil thoughts do not come from God and do not belong to God's likeness. This knowledge prevented wrong thoughts from dwelling in his consciousness, and annihilated wrong thoughts in others, just as the understanding that two times two are four destroys the incorrect assertion that two times two make five. In the Bible we read: "Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." The Christian Scientist follows the teachings of Christ Jesus, and controls his thoughts by knowing the truth about God and spiritual man. This method improves moral qualities; it develops kindness and brotherly love; it brings honesty and virtue into our daily life; it increases mental capacity. This is the only correct mental method.

Paul said: "For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God." The Coué system is based entirely upon the so-called carnal or human mind, through the control of one carnal mind over another carnal mind. M. Coué has admitted the hypnotic basis of his system. Therefore, it has no relation with God, divine Mind. It is, in fact, "enmity against God." It is a counterfeit of the true method of Christ Jesus. Therefore it is true to say that there is no similarity between the Coué system and Christian Science, in origin, in method, or in results.
