Harmony

When it was revealed to Mrs. Eddy that God is infinite good, she made the discovery that evil is unreal. Hence, Christian Science is continually emphasizing the truth that harmony is real and discord unreal. While Christian Scientists do not make this declaration aggressively in the face of the thought of the world, knowing that it is often wiser to affirm the truth silently to themselves, they are nevertheless constantly endeavoring to realize that harmony is real and discord unreal. And it is wonderful how mankind, generally, is coming to admit this truth, and to benefit accordingly by it. For as it is acknowledged, healing follows, — physical and mental healing.

Mrs. Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 276): "Discord is the nothingness named error. Harmony is the somethingness named Truth." When these words are first read by the student of Christian Science, he may be astounded at them. What? he may think; can discord really be nothing, and is harmony alone real and identical with Truth? Probably he has never regarded discord in this way before; for has it not always bulked large in the eyes of the world, and has it not seemed at times to be very much in evidence as sickness, suffering, sorrow, and sin? But if he is wise, he does not hastily brush this new view of discord aside; he ponders it in the light of the allness of God, good. Then, possibly quite suddenly, the great fact flashes full upon his consciousness that harmony alone is real and discord is nothing; and from that moment existence to him is no longer an enigma, but a glorious spiritual reality, the great actuality of omnipresent, harmonious being, of which he is an immortal part.

It would be difficult to estimate how tremendously farreaching is the discovery of the allness of harmony. Although it is less than sixty years since Mrs. Eddy's discovery, its influence has been felt in the lives of millions. Sometimes its effects are seen in the healing of temperamental defects,—such as the tendency to impatience, irritability, and the like; often its effects are visible in the overcoming of sinful thoughts and practices, and more frequently still in the healing of disease. For Christian Science proves beyond all possibility of doubt that the understanding of the allness of harmony and the unreality of discord is the most potent of all means in the healing of sickness and sin. Our Leader writes in Science and Health (p. 492): "Being is holiness, harmony, immortality. It is already proved that a knowledge of this, even in small degree, will uplift the physical and moral standard of mortals, will increase longevity, will purify and elevate character."
