Christian Science was first brought to my notice when my need was greatest, and I am very grateful to be able to express my gratitude for the healings I have had through some understanding of God and of man as His image and likeness, as revealed to us through the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and other writings by Mary Baker Eddy. My first healing was instantaneous. There was a growth in my breast which caused me great pain; and there was also, what was much worse, great fear, for I was told I must have an operation, and I felt that if taken away from home I should never return.
At that time I was very much occupied with religious work in a nonconformist church, and as far as I then knew was striving to live according to the pattern given in the Sermon on the Mount. I often had to admit to myself how far I was from living the life Jesus lived. I was struggling with sickness, pain, discord, and often wished I could get somewhere where I could realize for myself the beautiful promises in the Bible. My interpretation of the promises then was that I should realize them sometimes, somewhere, but not here. This was just where I was when Christian Science found me.
A friend who knew of my physical condition very kindly asked me to borrow the textbook from the Reading Room, and encouraged me by telling me of some healings. I borrowed the book, and that night, after reading about two hours, I was healed. I realized something of what Mrs. Eddy says on page 14 of the textbook, "Become conscious for a single moment that Life and intelligence are purely spiritual,—neither in nor of matter,—and the body will then utter no complaints." I had a glimpse of the goodness of Love. I saw that God was with me, and that He did not afflict; and I knew that He did not wish me to suffer; and I realized that I was healed. The next day I used my arm with perfect freedom, had no more pain, and finally the lump itself disappeared. This, of course, led me to look into Christian Science; and I very soon found that I had grown out of my old teaching. Within three months I had resigned all my positions in my old church and had begun at the alphabet of Science, for I saw this was necessary if I would understand this wonderful teaching.
