Freedom

IN these days when nations are struggling for freedom, it is well to consider what freedom means to the individual; for unless freedom is attained by the individual, there can be no true freedom for the nations. Down through the ages mankind has been trying to become free. The Bible records that when men have been obedient to God they have proved that evil had no power to keep them bound. This was the case with Joseph, Daniel, Peter, and many others. Also, through his obedience to God, Moses was enabled to lead the children of Israel out of the bondage of Egypt and through the wilderness, until the necessity of obeying God was learned.

There can be no freedom without obedience to God, divine Principle. Mrs. Eddy tells us in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 496), "You will learn that in Christian Science the first duty is to obey God, to have one Mind, and to love another as yourself;" and, again, on page 226, "I saw before me the sick, wearing out years of servitude to an unreal master in the belief that the body governed them, rather than Mind." Mrs. Eddy then goes on fearlessly to explain that "the law of the divine Mind must end human bondage" (p. 227). It naturally follows that this law must be obeyed. Mere contentment with the letter of the law will not enable us to experience the harmony which follows unswerving obedience to the law of God.

Christian Science is bringing to mankind true liberty by revealing the Christ. The prophet Isaiah foretold that the Christ would proclaim "liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound." Jesus the Christ declared, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." Moreover, Jesus proved by his life and works that the Christ, Truth, does make free. It was his obedience to divine Principle that enabled him to free himself and others from the slavery of the material senses.
