Letters from the Field
To the Trustees under the Will of Mary Baker Eddy:
We might, perhaps, liken the writings of our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, unto one of nature's blessings to humanity,—a tree. In her spiritualized consciousness was the seed of inspiration, from which has sprung a tree of the greatest magnitude, spreading its branches of ever increasing blessings over all who honestly seek the shadow of its understanding. The sap of the tree, flowing into each branch, twig, and leaf, through free channels, nourishes it, sustaining, upbuilding, and upholding it.
Due to the foresight of the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, we, as twigs of the ever growing tree, are enabled to spread our leaves to reach outside the confines of our immediate society. Her writings reach many people through the free circulating library maintained in our Reading Room. When our society was organized, in 1911, only a few copies of Mrs. Eddy's writings, other than "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," were owned by the members, one individual alone being in possession of a complete set, which she lent freely. But lending even freely means to the borrower a restricted channel, and one which the seeker of Truth is reluctant to follow continually. Our only access to the Concordance to Science and Health and "The Life of Mary Baker Eddy" by Sibyl Wilbur, at that time, was brought about by a day's journey to a near-by city and a visit to the Reading Room there. All of these volumes are now in our free circulating library, and have been of great assistance to the Readers conducting our services. The Sunday school children also make use of the Manual of The Mother Church, from which they learn the "Daily Prayer" (p. 41) and "A Rule for Motives and Acts" (p. 40).
