In an article about the healing mission in England, a correspondent to your paper has made kindly mention of Christian Science. But as he also says that the Bishop of Manchester thinks that the foundation of Christian Science is "utterly erroneous," I ask permission to give some information to those who want to know the truth.
According to the Observer, London, January 20, 1924, the often-mentioned Lambeth Conference in London in 1920 unanimously declared that "the power to exercise spiritual healing is taught by Christ to be the natural heritage of Christian people who are living in fellowship with God, and is part of the ministry of Christ through his body, the church." The reason for calling this conference, in which many of the bishops of England were present, was that the British clergy had become alive to the many thousands of spiritual healings which have been performed in the United States and in the British Dominions, yes, throughout the whole civilized world, through Christian Science,—healings which cannot be ignored.
As Christian Science, during more than fifty years, has demonstrated healings of all manner of diseases, it cannot be said that the foundation of this teaching is "utterly erroneous," for, as we read in the Bible, a corrupt tree cannot bring forth good fruit. Christian Science is founded upon the Bible teaching that God is the only cause and creator, who saw that all He had made was "very good." As God is Spirit, all that He makes must be spiritual. "That which is born of the Spirit is spirit." Consequently, our true self, which is born in the image and likeness of God, must be wholly spiritual. Through Christian Science we learn to recognize this spiritual condition and to find all things under the control of supreme wisdom.
