Salem, Ohio, has been my home for over thirty years
Salem, Ohio, has been my home for over thirty years. During the first part of that period I attended every church in town except the Christian Science church, which I would not go near. I wanted to join a church, but was seeking for something I did not seem to find in the churches.
There came to my home one Sunday morning some friends who said they had come to take me to the Christian Science service. I laughingly replied I would go with them, thinking that would be the easiest way out. Arriving a little late, we were seated in the second row from the front. I remember looking sideways and wishing I were out of there. Then the most wonderful thing happened. I forgot myself in listening to the beautiful service. I was very much impressed; the hymns were very helpful, and I became content and happy. The thought came to me that all the members must be praying for me. The spiritual uplift which came to me that morning I shall never forget: it seemed so satisfying to me, so helpful, so restful. I felt at peace with the whole world.
In due time I joined the Christian Science Society; for after that morning I could not stay away. I began to look forward to the Sunday service, and then to the Wednesday evening testimony meeting. I studied the Bible, with "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, using the Quarterly, and began to see that the healings of Jesus were not only for those living long ago. I began to find my troubles melting away into their native nothingness. I could not tell when they went, but finally realized I did not have them any more. I had had heart disease, supposed to be hereditary; back trouble from a fall when I hit my spine; bowel disorder, which had become chronic; and I had been in bed three months with a nervous breakdown. To-day I find myself well, better in every way than I was thirty years ago. Not a drop of medicine have I taken since becoming a Scientist, for God has been my only physician.
