When I first became interested in Christian Science,...
When I first became interested in Christian Science, through a friend in business, I went to a Wednesday evening testimony meeting, but thought nothing of it and did not follow it up. One year later, however, I felt I wanted to go again. I was suffering from astigmatism and nervousness, and for three years had, much to my dislike, worn glasses. This second time I must have been more receptive to the truth, for I came out of the church very happy and full of hope, and the very next day purchased a copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. After I had read this book for several hours, a peace came to me which I shall never forget; it was the peace which "passeth all understanding."
That same evening I took off my glasses; and I have not worn them since. That was about ten years ago. With the aid of a practitioner, who explained to me that my sight was spiritual, not material, and the daily study of the Lesson-Sermon and the reading of the Christian Science periodicals, I soon found that my eyes were thoroughly healed. During these ten years many other healings have come to me, ptomaine poisoning, sore throat, colds, and so on, having been overcome. I have recently, with the aid of a practitioner, experienced the healing of a malignant boil on the leg. My leg was so swollen, and the pain so severe, that I was unable to be about for several days and was kept awake at night. During this experience I was much impressed by the sentence on page 162 of Science and Health, "Christian Science brigns to the body the sunlight of Truth, which invigorates and purifies;" also, with what Mrs. Eddy says on page 421 of the same book. These enabled me to know that there is no disease and to change my thought from the material to the spiritual. After four hours of reading I was free from the pain, and the inflammation subsided. In three days the boil opened; and after five days I was able to resume my business activities.
Words are not enough to express the profound gratitude I feel for all these healings and for the little understanding I have of this beloved truth. My wish is that I may be worthy of the name Christian Scientist.
