Fidelity

FIDELITY is one of the finest traits in Christian character, ranking side by side with honesty, purity, and humility. Fidelity was wonderfully evidenced by Christ Jesus; for never in the whole history of mankind was there one so faithful as he to the precepts he taught and to the friends he loved. Just before the Last Supper—so the Scriptural narrative runs—"when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end,"—or "to the uttermost." And that was exactly what was to be expected of him who understood so thoroughly and reflected so perfectly the divine Principle, Love.

Christ Jesus was the embodiment of all that was honorable. It is noteworthy that in every particular of his life he showed complete obedience to the Decalogue, whose law he recognized as binding on all who accepted his teaching. While he gave to the world his two great commandments of love to God and love to man, he maintained the Ten Commandments in all their integrity, seeking not to delete a single syllable of them. He was faithful to revealed spiritual law in its every detail; and that fact accounts for the sublimity of his character in every particular of it.

The Christian Scientist, who is a follower of the great Nazarene, is deeply conscious of the value of fidelity. He has received from Christian Science the priceless gift of spiritual understanding, and he knows that to demonstrate that understanding, even in a small degree, he must be faithful to it. Accordingly, he strives to hold fast to the knowledge he has of God, of God's law, and of God's creation, man. And so, as in the case of the Way-shower himself, he endeavors to be obedient to his highest spiritual understanding.
