"Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth"

CAN we be self-willed, self-opinionated, worldly wise, and meek in heart at the same time? To this query there is only one answer,—No! To be truly meek means, "Not my will, but thine, be done." The humble Nazarene, who gave us these words, was the meekest man who ever lived on earth; and because he was truly meek, he was able to demonstrate supreme power over sin, sickness, and death.

The importance of following Jesus in the path of meekness is clearly described by Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, who emphasizes throughout all her works that spiritual sense, which enables us to understand Truth, cannot be gained unless "we are honest, unselfish, loving, and meek," as we read in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 272). On page 516 of this book our Leader points out that even from the plants and the grass we may learn grand lessons of meekness and humility; while on page 597 we learn that only through true meekness is spiritual power gained.

The word "meek" stands for, and is associated with, mildness of temper; not being easily provoked or irritated; given to forbearance under injuries; gentleness; humility; patience; being submissive to the divine will. If we open our consciousness to these qualities, we shall be blessed by becoming receptive to the spiritual good they bring; and thus we may "inherit the earth."
