When Christian Science first came to my attention I was,...
When Christian Science first came to my attention I was, to mortal sense, a complete wreck. I had been a miserable sufferer from tuberculosis for about eight years, during which time treatment by specialists failed to help me. After a month in a hospital in New York city, I spent two years in the Adirondack Mountains, a year in California, another year in Colorado, and again in California for six years. Then, scarcely able to work, and in utter despondency, I returned to Colorado; but as my condition grew worse, I planned to leave again, thinking the altitude was too great.
Truly "man's extremity is God's opportunity." For the last three years of my stay in California I had been a half-hearted student of Christian Science, and my indifference to this precious truth prevented me from receiving much benefit. When all else had failed me, I turned longingly to God. It was seven years ago that I awakened to the true beauty and power of Christian Science, and since then it has been my all-absorbing study. As the result of earnest study and the help of practitioners, I have been healed of that chronic and supposedly fatal disease. I now work hard in an office all day; and for about five years I have either attended night school or studied at home after business. About two years ago, I passed the required physical examination and was accepted for a life insurance policy by one of the most conservative companies.
The first Christian Science treatment I received was for a very bad hemorrhage. The copius flow of blood was stopped soon after the treatment, and I marched two miles in a parade a couple of hours later. In 1918, many who were considered well and strong passed away as a result of influenza while relying on materia medica. At that time I was considered a chronic invalid and a weakling, but Christian Science treatment healed me of a bad case of influenza in about three weeks.
