When Christian Science came into my life I was in the...
When Christian Science came into my life I was in the very depths of despondency and discouragement. This condition I can now see was the culmination of an intensely material sense of existence, combined with an overwhelming desire to find that upon which I might place implicit reliance. My faith in materiality had been shaken to its very foundations. For several years prior to this time I had been half-heartedly searching for this reliance in various human systems, but they fell far short of offering even a temporary sense of that security which I inwardly felt must be available to men. From a human standpoint I was all but lost, not so much physically, as mentally; and it was then that God's guiding hand was felt, and I eagerly turned to Christian Science for help.
My first healing was one which I have come to appreciate more and more as I have advanced in the truth, for it was not a healing such as I had humanly longed for at the time, namely, mere bodily peace, but was rather the firm establishment in my consciousness of the absolute truth of Christian Science. Even though the physical and mental rest I had wished might come did not appreciably appear at that time, the firm conviction that Christian Science was the "pearl of great price" and would eventually lead me to a full salvation did, however, come; and for this I am humbly grateful. During the intervening years I have used this truth daily, and can now testify to robust health and an ever increasing confidence, based on understanding that God lovingly cares for His children.
Probably the most tenacious phase of evil which I have had to overcome was that of smoking; but this demonstration was finally and beautifully made through the earnest desire to serve our Cause through becoming a member of a branch church. I well knew that I could not become a member while a slave to this habit. The healing was instantaneous, and came while contemplating the great need of humanity for what Christian Science has to give, and the consequent great need for workers to make it available to them in the way provided by our inspired Leader. I have always regarded it as a direct proof of the spiritual power which is reflected by the Church of Christ, Scientist, and which is manifested toward all who align themselves with it in the spirit of service, be that service for the spiritualization of one's thought or the extension of this spiritualizing truth to others.
