Christian Scientists are not engaged in the practice of material medicine. If they were, they would go before a board of medical examiners and procure licenses. In healing the sick, and in resisting all forms of evil, Christian Scientists pray to God, even as James admonished when he said, "Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; ... and the prayer of faith shall save the sick."

Jesus, who was the master Physician, did not learn how to do his work in medical schools, and there is no record that those whom he selected to work with him were required to have medical training as a prerequisite. When he called his disciples unto him it is said he gave them power "to heal ... all manner of disease." Healing through spiritual means has been recognized all down the ages, and those who have had experience with material methods of healing, and who also have had spiritual help in times of trouble, will gladly and willingly testify that spiritual aid is much more effective and satisfactory. In the Old Testament we find that Moses healed the sick by prayer; so did Elisha and others; and no one who reads and studies the New Testament can deny that healing by spiritual means is emphasized and urged as the curative method. History records that for two or three centuries, beginning with the Christian era, healing the sick as taught and practiced by the Master and his disciples was popularly adhered to.

Christian Science is a restatement of primitive Christianity; it has nothing in common with what is called new-thought, and applied psychology. Christian Science exemplifies the life, teaching, and practices of Jesus the Christ, who set at naught every claim of material law. Christian Science and its methods are therefore directly opposed to suggestion, hypnotism, mental science, evolution, and their methods. Christian Science is founded on immortal truth; it acknowledges no power but good; it recognizes one God, who is infinite good, and one Christ, who is an ever present help.
