I was not particularly ill when Christian Science was...
I was not particularly ill when Christian Science was presented to me, except for catarrh in the head and periodical bilious attacks. These conditions were healed in Christian Science without specific treatment. This was owing to regular attendance at the church services and the daily reading of the Lesson-Sermon, besides other Christian Science literature. I should like to mention that the bilious attacks were more severe as they became less frequent, and sometimes I had hard battles. I would read the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and never gave up until freed.
I should like to tell of another healing, that of Spanish influenza. One evening, after listening to some people giving an account of this disease and making rather a vivid picture of it to me, I allowed myself to make a few unnecessary remarks. I never had such an experience. Here was another chance for me to try the efficacy of Christian Science.
I had read Science and Health several times and was familiar with different quotations. On pages 150 and 151 Mrs. Eddy refers to the fact that "the human mind and body are myths." Well then, I thought, if this body is only a myth I will get up. I immediately arose, dressed myself, and said nothing to any one about it. I did all my usual Saturday's work, but was not able to partake of food. There had been occasions before when I would go without food for a day or two, and would not notice it; but this time it seemed to affect me, and I wanted to talk to a practitioner about it. When I arrived at his house, although I was feeling well physically, he thought it best to give me a treatment. When I returned home I sat down to the table and ate my meal as usual. The next day I felt upset again, although my appetite was good; and the following morning I went again to the practitioner's office. After we had been talking a little while I made the remark that hymn 125 of the Christian Science Hymnal appealed to me as being very beautiful, especially the verse which says,
