The Lectures

Havana, Cuba (Society).—Mrs. Florence Brink Alarco made the following prefatory remarks at a Christian Science lecture by Geo. Shaw Cook:—

In the book of Proverbs we are told, "In the way of righteousness is life; and in the pathway thereof there is no death." So we know that it is only by right thinking, right speaking, and right acting we are enabled to tread firmly in that pathway wherein there is no death. Christian Science points out the way.

I am a grateful witness to its healing power. Over twenty years ago I was healed of a disease said to be inherited, and from which no hope of release was given. Since then I have experienced other healings; for all of which I am deeply grateful. But the greatest blessing that Christian Science has brought to me is the understanding that God is not the author of sin, disease, and death, that He does not send trouble upon us as discipline. On page 494 of her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy says, "It is not well to imagine that Jesus demonstrated the divine power to heal only for a select number or for a limited period of time, since to all mankind and in every hour, divine Love supplies all good."

Elkhart, Ind. (First Church).—The following remarks were made by Jacob C. Lane when introducing Dr. Walton Hubbard, a Christian Science lecturer, to his audience:—

Truth is demonstrable. The Apostle Peter admonishes us, "Be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you." Christian Scientists are "ready always" to give their reasons. As for myself, over twenty years ago, after consulting and taking treatments of capable physicians, but not receiving the desired relief, I was persuaded to try Christian Science. I did so without one jot of faith or hope. To my utter surprise and delight I experienced a most wonderful healing from serious stomach and heart troubles with but five weeks of treatment. I believe I should not be here relating this but for that five weeks' experience; and I am anticipating still greater results by trying to live up to its spiritual teachings. What Christian Science has accomplished for me it can do for each and all of us.

Palo Alto, Calif. (First Church).—Charles Walter Marwedel made the following remarks prefatory to a Christian Science lecture by Frank Bell:—

A great desire of humanity is to be well and happy. God, Spirit, is the ever present source and supply for the realization of these conditions; yet many have failed to apprehend the fact. Some know that in following God's commands they will experience blessings; but that they will be freed from disease by a proper understanding of the truth of being as contained in the Scriptures has not been learned by them. Mrs. Eddy found the way therein, and gave it to the world in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." She founded the Christian Science church on this discovery; and the Bible and this textbook became its only preachers.

Mount Clemens, Mich. (First Church).—Introducing Charles I. Ohrenstein, a Christian Science lecturer, to his audience, Mrs. Grace Cohen Gordon said in part:—

For centuries Christians have been praying for the Mind of Christ. In other words, they have been praying to know how to think rightly, as did Jesus, who proved that right thinking could heal the sick, cleanse the leper, and raise the dead. Jesus proved by his works that to love one's neighbor as one's self is possible and profitable.

Christian Science has come to this age to teach us how to acquire and put into practice Jesus' method of right thinking. Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 259): "The Christlike understanding of scientific being and divine healing includes a perfect Principle and idea,—pefect God and perfect man,—as the basis of thought and demonstration." Some of those who heard Jesus, when they realized that his statements were provable, said that he spoke with authority. The Christian Scientist of to-day, who is a follower of Christ, can speak with authority and furnish the proofs that the Mind of Christ is Immanuel or "God with us," and that this Mind can be attained here and now.
