One day I was taken seriously ill and was suffering so much that I was unable to help myself. I asked for Christian Science treatment that evening, but the next day I could see very little change. To add to this, our little girl, eight years old, was also attacked with severe chills, pains in the back and chest, followed by very high fever. About half past two in the morning she became so delirious we were obliged to get help from a practitioner for her also. My husband and I worked in Science to the best of our knowledge, and in about an hour she began to breathe quite normally and to sleep peacefully. But in the morning when she got up she was seized again with the same symptoms as before, while my case was so complicated and distressing that we seemed to have allowed fear to creep in for her.

Our treatment continued three days with seemingly no change but for the worse. During the third day a neighbor came in, and seeing the child's condition pronounced it a severe case of pneumonia. At that time she seemed at times as if she would pass on. The practitioner was again informed of the case, and the fear of death was destroyed. The next day the child was greatly improved. At the end of a week she and I were both able to go out.

I had for years suffered so severely from varicose veins that I was compelled to wear an elastic stocking or stay off my feet for fear they would burst. But since taking up the study of Christian Science I have never felt the need of the stocking. During the above illness the veins had swollen to twice as large a size as formerly, and the leg became hard. The treatment was discontinued, as I realized there was work for me to do. For about three weeks I could only sit or lie on one side, and when I walked I had to drag that leg; but soon the swelling and hardness began slowly to disappear, and by continually knowing, as Mrs. Eddy tells us in our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 283), that "Mind is the source of all movement," the blood began to flow. As I continued to study, the difficulty continued to go.
