I was brought up in a Christian home, but neither the church nor the Bible seemed to give the protection that I needed. I drifted away from all religious faith, and for about fifteen years neither attended church nor read the Bible. Later on, Christian Science was brought to my attention at a time when I had great need of it on account of ill health and financial problems. The awakening came through witnessing the miraculous healing of friends. Mrs. Eddy, on page 131 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," says, "The mission of Jesus ... explained the so-called miracles of olden time as natural demonstrations of the divine power." Many such demonstrations have come to me during the twelve years of my study of Christian Science.
My first healing was an instantaneous one of stomach trouble, which had dated from childhood, and which one physician had warned me might result in cancer. Scarlet fever in childhood had seemed to leave severe headaches, for which I was constantly taking phenacetin. These have been healed. About two years ago, after having treatment in Science for a short time, a growth passed from me. At another time, during a conversation with a shoe salesman concerning arch supporters, it came to me quite clearly that God never made fallen arches, from which I had seemed to suffer; and with this realization, the quotation from Science and Health (p. 261) beginning, "Hold thought steadfastly to the enduring, the good, and the true," came to my thought. There has never been any suffering from fallen arches since.
A short time ago, while entertaining a physician in our home, I awoke one morning to find myself unable to rise on account of rheumatism in my back and shoulders. The practitioner, when called, said, "Come to the office." Quite chagrined at such advice, I replied that it was impossible, because walking was out of my power. Nevertheless, that afternoon I went to the practitioner's office, and after my call had dinner in town and accompanied our guest to the night train.
