Work

The Bible abounds in admonitions to work; and to the student of Christian Science is unfolded a new view of what true work means. It is seen to be the reflection of the activity divine Mind. Jesus said, "My Father worketh hitherto, and I work." He also insisted that he could of himself do nothing, but that the Father dwelling in him did the work. Christ Jesus is the Way; and there is one rule for all mankind,—"Work out your own salvation. . . . For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure." This is an imperative call to each individual.

Sometimes the expressions "I did my work" and "When the work was done," used by Christian Scientists, seem strange to the beginner; but as the understanding of Christianly metaphysical work unfolds, and one endeavors to put into practice what he learns, this use of the word "work" takes on a new and sacred meaning. What is the work Jesus did, and that we are to do? It is to prove man's at-one-ment with the Father-Mother God; to recognize no law but His immutable, eternal law of good; to see man as spiritual; to know him as the image or reflection of Spirit, Life, Truth, Love, and, as such, perfect and harmonious.

One might also ask, How may we reach the understanding that will enable us to do this work correctly? Jesus gave the answer many times. He urged as the first and great commandment that we love God with all our heart, soul, and mind, and our neighbor as ourselves. He said, "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you;" "Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you;" "Watch ye therefore, and pray always."
