For seven years I had suffered from intestinal trouble,...
For seven years I had suffered from intestinal trouble, constipation, and other complications, which resulted in loss of sleep for days at a time, until I became convinced that I should not live long. During these years my wife and our children were made sad and unhappy at the thought that often I suffered intense pain; and when our family physician was unable to render a permanent cure, ours was indeed a sorrowful home. I prayed for death each night; and several times, while in a paroxysm of pain, thought of suicide.
That was my condition when Christian Science was offered to me by a friend. Having been a care-free metropolitan newspaper reporter for many years,—a careless liver and a caustic critic,—I treated the suggestion with scornful derision. The thought lingered with me, however, and a few days later I began reading "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. My first impression, based on a very material scrutiny, was not favorable. I had read hurriedly and in a critical mood. It struck me as a philosophy, and I tossed the book aside. I could not keep my hands and eyes from that book, however; and each evening found me picking it up and reading it at short intervals. A few days later I went to the nearest Christian Science Reading Room, and asked for the name of a practitioner. The librarian gave me the names of a number of local practitioners. I selected the one nearest to my home. The practitioner, a sweet-faced lady whom I had never seen before, heard my story, and that evening I enjoyed my first real sleep in many weeks. She gave me to understand that I was a child of God, and that God was not in human form; that God was Love, Life, and Truth; that God made everything and called it good; and that God is All-in-all. Three days later, with these thoughts overshadowing a very material human consciousness, my troubles melted away into their native nothingness. My strength was renewed; and our once sorrowful home has been transformed into a happy and healthy household. I am very grateful for the scalding tears which helped to usher this beautiful religion of Love into our lives. We have not used materia medica in our home since this first demonstration, and the four people constituting my family are now devout students of Christian Science. We are grateful to God; to Christ Jesus, the Way-shower; to Mrs. Eddy; and to the loving practitioner for leading us out of the wilderness into the understanding of divine Love.
It may be that this will reach some other wanderer in the wilderness and render some service to the suffering. If so, I shall be amply rewarded.
